A Meal to Remember
Perhaps one of the best meals I have had in my life was at Paduri Beach. One Sunday afternoon early this spring, a couple of friends and I drove out to Paduri to enjoy a feed of chokoomi (not sure that is the right spelling). Chokoomi is a small member of the octopus family and for a brief period of time in the spring they are a sought after delicacy. At that time, the bulbous part of the chokoomi is full of eggs.
It was an overcast, somewhat stormy day, but we were cozy in the steamy restaurant looking out at the black sky and wind whipped water. When the chokoomi arrived, I was nowhere near prepared for the taste I was about to experience. Unlike anything I had ever tasted, it was exquisite – I am really sorry I can give you no better description. Over the moon, orgasmic, out of sight would be the best I could do here. I could not stop eating it. It seemed an idyllic moment with friends, wonderful food and as pretty as a post card scenery.
A memorable meal regardless, but now, so much more imprinted on my brain because I know in the time that remains to me, that I am unlikely to experience that meal at that place ever again.—Rick Wakeman
